Vila Verde

With an area of 226 km2 administratively distributed by 58 parishes, and a population of about 45 000 inhabitants, Vila Verde is a relatively modern council with little more than one hundred years of existence, and is considered one of the largest of the province of Minho.

Vila Verde was founded in October 24th 1855, after the extinction of other councils such as Pico de Regalados, Vila Chã, Larim Penal and Prado, whose origins go back to the Middle Ages.

Pico de Regalados was, in primeval times, a covert endowed by D. Afonso Henriques to the Archbishop of Braga, D. Paio Mendes. It was considered one of the most ancient and aristocratic coverts of the country. The king, D. Manuel I, granted it a charter in November 13th 1513.

Vila Chã and Larim were the first charters granted by King D. Afonso III. Its primitive seat was located in the place bearing the name that presently belongs to the parish of Carreiras S. Tiago. Later on, it changed its headquarters to Revenda, in the parish of Travassós, and after that it moved once again to the parish of S. Paio de Vila Verde.
