LET DISCOVER Lindoso VILLAGE

Lindoso village is located 25 km from Ponte da Barca. This Parish have 1300 inhabitants mainly agricultures.
For many centuries Lindoso played a key role in the defence of the Portuguese frontier. Its main attractions today are the castle, and one of the country’s best-preserved collections of granaries. Restoration work has recently been carried out here.
The castle of Lindoso is classified as National Monument and stands on a small rocky outcrop beside the village of the same name. Well worth a visit, it was built during the region of Afonso III, with bulwarks and other defensive works from the 17th century.

The region…

Lindoso’s castle is a defence monument, which has played an important role during periods of military conflict with Castela. It was built in the 13th century and during the Restoration Wars, it played a major role because of its frontier localization. Inside, the walls, the alcaide and garrison houses, the chapel and the oven, among others, are in ruins.

There is an threshing-ground composed of 50 granaries of the 17th and 18th centuries. It is located near the castle and constitutes a unique and beautiful agglomerate. Entirely made of stone, each one is supported by several short columns, standing on rock. The granary’s covering is made of two granite slabs united in an obtuse angle, decorated by a protective cross.

About 20 km East of this village is Touvedo Dam which, besides the production of energy, complements Alto Lindoso Dam, controlling the high streams from the turbine (a total of 250 m3 for the two groups). Touvedo plays an important regulatory role, avoiding harsh changes in the stream of Lima river.

The feast of Santa Maria Madalena is held on the first Sunday after 22 July. During the procession, the Saint is carried on a wood cart, because of the belief in a miracle: a man asked the saint to relieve him of an incurable disease in a leg. For pay, he would offer a cart to carry the Saint, due to the big distance between Lindoso and Madalena. The miracle happened and the promise was kept.
