Vieira do Minho

The name Vieira may have its origin in the word Velleira (name of a monastery called S. João Baptista de Velleira), or it may derive from one of the illustrious names of the region: Rui Vieira, who is mentioned in the inquisitions of D. Dinis.

Of ancient origin, as the countless archaeological findings prove, the parishes that nowadays are part of Vieira, have belonged before to several councils and villages, now extinct.

Caniçada, Cova, Salamonde, Soengas and Ventosa have belonged to the council of Ribeira de Soás, whose charter was granted by D. Manuel in 1515; Parada de Bouro belonged to Couto de Parada de Bouro, created by D. Sancho I who offered it to fair Ribeirinha; Cantelães, Eira Vedra, Mosteiro, Pinheiro, Tabuaças, Vieira and Vilarchão composed the council of Vieira; Campos and Ruivães belonged to the council of Ruivães. Anjos and Rossas belonged to the council of Rossas to which D. Manuel granted charter in 1514; Guilhofrei belonged to the council of Vila Boa da Roda, whose charter was granted by D. Manuel in 1514. Lastly Soutelo and Louredo belonged to the council of Lanhoso, to which D. Dinis granted charter in 1292.
